Sylvia Yee holds a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, under the tutelage Hamish Milne. She completed her Bachelor of Music with distinction at the University of Victoria, BC, with May-Ling Kwok where she was a recipient of numerous musical awards and scholarships, including the Victoria Registered Music Teachers Scholarship, Madeline Till Competition, Horning Memorial and Fletcher Piano Scholarships. Sylvia completed her Associate Diploma (ARCT) in Piano Pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music, LRSM diploma from Associated board of the Royal Schools of Music, and LLCM from the London College of Music with Edward Parker.
Sylvia has played in masterclasses and had lessons with Anton Kuerti, Kevin Fitzgerald, Christopher Elton, Ian Fountain, Bruce Vogt, and Ava Solar-Kinderman. She received chamber coaching from the Lafayette Quartet, Nicola Eimer, and Erich Gruenberg. In her hometown of Vancouver, she also studied with Kenneth Broadway, Ian Parker, and Alyssa Wang who transmitted their creative energy, bountiful knowledge and rich legacies to her. During her career in the UK, she has performed as an artist for Steinway and Sons events and played in solo and chamber recitals across London.
Sylvia takes an interest in discovering new talents and has adjudicated for the Phyllis Salter Piano Competition at the Vancouver Academy of Music and the CIBC Youth Piano Competition.
A wealth of teaching and life experience spanning across three continents
Sylvia Yee has taught hundreds of children and adult beginner students for over 20 years in the UK, France, India, and Canada from different cultures. As much as she enjoys working with children, Sylvia also welcomes adult students who are busy professionals or retirees wishing to pick up a new skill and support their cognitive health.
She believes in nurturing a spirit of musical exploration and is dedicated to helping her students find their unique tone and narrative. Combining interactive teaching, exercises to strengthen technique, and a strong foundational understanding of theory, students will develop a capacity for concentration and self-reliance, learn to delve deeper into the music as well as achieve outstanding performance results
Above all else, Sylvia will help you develop a lifelong passion and appreciation for music.
Outside of the teaching studio, Sylvia enjoys hiking in Howe Sound or skiing on the North Shore mountains with her family.
